For the first time the Neue Synagoge Berlin in the Oranienburger Straße is opening its high-security gates to a dance-theatre-performance:
“ACTION!” shouts God. No one knows the script. Will this turn into a documentary, a promotional video or a religious freak-show? Four performers from Israel, Iceland and Switzerland – all agnostics, not one a believer – search for their holy calling among the wounded walls, under the golden dome. They offer their individual cultural and religious imprints and their spiritual experiences as material for a script, whose author remains obscure. How honestly can they deal with these questions? What do they actually believe in? And what are they hoping for?
ACTION is a Jewish-pagan-atheist mystery play in three stations. In the 'garden' of the Synagogue – the bombed-out missing back of the building -  God reveals His abysmal discontent, His boredom and His yearning for – Action. In His search for entertainment and self-affirmation He has written a challenging film script: in numerous flashbacks the protagonists are called upon to re-imagine their neglected spiritual awakening. Then the four skeptical saints withdraw into the Darkroom, in order to absorb their mission. Upstairs in the Lecture Hall, the third station, their religious zeal develops its own rules; the once holy spaces take on an entirely new significance. And then the finale of the script demands the great sacrificial scene. God – are you still watching? We are rolling!
